An embarrassing vis-à-vis with your neighbors? The contents of a busy bookshelf that you would like to hide at the sight of your guests? The awning is the ideal asset for effective and attractive protection and camouflage. In paper or fabric, it will adapt very easily to your existing decoration provided, of course, to have been customized. House apart offers you three methods. You choose!
Customizing a store is a really simple operation that you do not think about. However, it is sufficient to obtain a blank model paper or fabric (such as boat store, for example) and then customize it to suit his tastes and its existing decoration.
The budget allocated to this customization is not too high (count between 15 and 25 $ for the purchase of the standard plantation shutter companies and hardware), you can also make several and therefore regularly alternate between different models.
Then, it’s up to you to install it, either to protect yourself from a troublesome vis-à-vis with your neighbors, or to hide the contents of a well-stocked shelf.
Different techniques for the same result
To decorate a store, many techniques are available to you: painting (acrylic or textile, depending on your support), stencils, collage of papers, rolls, brushes, markers, stickers, etc.
In the following slideshow, we have chosen to present three easily accessible to beginners: stencil painting and foam pad, roller painting and sticking stickers.
Feel free to get inspired ideas to create your own version of store!
Discover three models of custom blinds on the following pages.
The raw blind
This is a paper awning, folded accordion. This plantation shutter companies is 91cm wide but it is quite possible to cut it to the desired width, since it is paper.
Unfolded, it measures 182cm in height, and will be adaptable as well by cutting it.
In general, it is sold with two small plastic clamps to keep it in the raised position if you wish.
Setting up the awning
To work this large support, the ideal is to put it on the ground, protecting your soil with a tarpaulin or thick paper, kraft paper style. The latter exists in large rolls: it is very practical to protect large surfaces (tables, soles, etc.).
- Also remember to put a weight at the 4 corners, to keep it in place.
- Stencil Painting – The Material
- To make your stencil frieze, you need:
- – A paper awning
- – A sticker stencil (repositionable)
– Several shades of acrylic paints (here, green shades, minimum 2),
- – Several foam pads
- – A plastic plate
Count around 25 $ for the total budget (store included).
Apart from the blind, all the rest of the material can be used for other creations (including the stencil).
Place your stencil where you want to reproduce your pattern.
In the case of a frieze, measure the length of your awning and that of your stencil to distribute it correctly.
Note, there are now large stencils that measure about 1.50 meters and form a large frieze.
Stencil Painting – Intermediate Stage
Prepare your different colors by spreading them in your plastic plate.
Each foam pad is a color, try not to mix them.
Start with the lightest shade. Do not put too much paint on the pad, we must be able to see the cells.
If you have taken too much paint, dab a little on the plate to “unload”.
The foam pad is very interesting for stencilling: if you respect this rule of not overloading it with paint, it really prevents the paint from going under the stencil (as often happens when the we work at
Fill the stencil by dabbing the lightest color (right on the photo).
Take the next color (always go from the lightest to the darkest) and dab only some areas of the stencil. The idea is then to create zones, to give relief to your motive. The darkest color is usually on the outer edges of the stencil, but not always. If you are hesitating, make a first try on a separate sheet, this will allow you to know where you are going.
When moving your stencil, be sure to wipe it off, in case the paint has spun underneath. It would be a shame to drool the painting on the following pattern.
Stencil Painting – Result
Here is the pattern stencil repeated over the entire height of the plantation shutter companies.
The stencil has the advantage of allowing you to repeat a pattern to infinity, without variation in the drawing.
Note that this stencil has also been used to match the cushion. On the other hand, on fabric, use textile paint.
- Roller painting – The material
- To make an urban style awning, you need:
- – A paper awning
- – A small foam roller
- – Acrylic paint, black and white (to create different shades of gray)
- – A square-cut paint sponge
- – A plastic plate
Count a budget of about 20 $ (store included).
Apart from the store, all the rest of the material can, again, serve you for other creations.
Roller painting – intermediate step
Load your scroll in paint and start drawing silhouettes of buildings on your blind. These must be of different height, shape and color to create diversity.
To give relief to the whole, dab in a light gray rectangle / squares with your sponge, to signify windows.
To finish occupying the space, use your roller to create clouds. Here you will work with small touches, complemented by touches of lighter gray with a sponge.
Roller painting – Result
Before installing your creation, be sure to let it dry.
In the end, in just a few minutes, you have completely transformed the initial model!
Collage of stickers – The material
To simply customize your paper store, you can also use large stickers. Here we have chosen vases with orchids, to bring a natural touch to your interior.
Count a budget of about 15-20 $ (store included), depending on the chosen models of stickers.
Stickers collage – Intermediate stage
Before you embark on the collage, do some investment tests with your stickers. To do this, roughly cut around your patterns, so you can move them easily.
Think about balancing your decor. Again, it all depends on where you install the blind: for example, do not position the decorations at the bottom of the blind if it is intended to go behind a coffee table, the rendering would be strange.
To take off ornate patterns like these flowers, it is sometimes easier to remove the protective film around the pattern.
Then you can take off the pattern, without the risk of tearing it.
Collage of stickers – The result
Here is your custom blind!
Of course, this version is to be reserved for a blind that you will not fold every day, under penalty of damaging (or taking off, in the long run) the stickers.
